US 18 (Bluemound Road) Resurfacing

Brookfield, WI

Project Overview

raSmith provided transportation engineering, traffic engineering, and survey services to support this $15.6 million pavement rehabilitation. Spanning 5.33 miles from I-94 to the eastern Waukesha County line near 124th Street, this two-phase project revitalized a high-traffic, six- and eight-lane urban corridor.

Numerous improvements included milling and overlaying existing pavement, targeting base patching of underlying concrete, and storm structure rehabilitation to extend the roadway life and enhance ride quality. The project also modernized infrastructure with upgraded traffic signals, including monotube installations at Underwood Crossing Parkway and 124th Street, refreshed pavement markings, and signing. Pedestrian accessibility played a significant role, illustrated by the replacement of non-compliant or deteriorated curb ramps to meet current ADA standards.

Additionally, a detailed construction staging plan successfully accommodated traffic at all times throughout the two construction seasons needed to build the project.

This pavement rehabilitation project delivered a smoother driving experience, improved traffic flow, enhanced safety through updated signals and markings, and provided greater accessibility for all users. By addressing both surface conditions and underlying infrastructure, the project ensured a more reliable, efficient corridor while reducing the need for future costly repairs.
