Project Overview
raSmith provided site design services for parking lot improvements at Turner Elementary School as part of multiple projects planned by West Chicago School District 33. The services included civil engineering design, zoning approval assistance, landscape architecture, stormwater permitting, the preparation of a stormwater pollution prevention plan (SWPPP), and construction assistance.
The design delivered solutions to several challenges. The project team navigated the zoning approval process for the addition of a new parent drop-off driveway that passes through the school-owned property surrounded by residential housing. This driveway, combined with a separate drop-off area for buses, increases student safety and improves circulation. Permeable pavers were integrated into the design to decrease the impervious development area and save on the cost of installing an underground detention system. Additionally, the team retained and protected an existing, mature memorial tree located in the center of the parking area.
