Project Overview
The Summit Credit Union project in Cottage Grove is shaped by a complex, visually engaging structural steel frame. The design centers around an exposed tree column feature that serves as a focal point for both the structural system and the interior aesthetic. This unique element required careful engineering coordination.
The building is primarily framed with structural steel, forming a robust yet flexible system that supports the project’s open interior layout and signature exposed elements. The structure incorporates steel roof framing supported by steel columns, creating large clear spans. The facility includes a small second-story office area constructed using a concrete slab poured over a metal deck system, providing durability and long-term performance while integrating seamlessly with the surrounding steel framing.
raSmith provided structural Engineer of Record services, which included the steel structure and foundations. We coordinated closely with the project architect (Strang) and the tree supplier (WholeTrees) during the design phase to integrate the tree column into the overall building structural system, where the tree column is an integral part of the structure, directly supporting the steel roof framing.
