National Avenue, S. 65th Street to Union Pacific Railroad

West Allis, WI

Project Overview

raSmith provided traffic engineering and transportation design services for the City of West Allis to implement roadway and non-motorized (pedestrian and bicycle) transportation safety improvements along W. National Avenue from S. 65th Street to the (now vacated) Union Pacific Railroad at-grade crossing. This project included median modifications, curb extensions, ADA-compliant curb ramps, on-street bike lanes, Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB), and high-visibility crosswalks.

The team evaluated intersection turning movements to verify adequate design vehicle accommodations and coordinated survey and utility information to identify potential conflicts early in the design process. Working closely with City staff, raSmith delivered a comprehensive construction-ready package that introduced traffic calming elements, mitigated driver sight distance concerns, and enhanced pedestrian and bicycle safety. The completed design helped the City advance corridor-wide initiatives that support a safer, more efficient, and user-friendly transportation network.
