Salem Mound Cemetery

Salem Lakes, WI

Project Overview

raSmith provided municipal engineering, surveying, and GIS services to support a preservation project for Salem Mound Cemetery in the Village of Salem Lakes, Wisconsin. Ownership of the family-operated cemetery was being transferred to the Village. This project involved recreating the layout of plots to identify and catalog the tombstones for maintenance.

The surveying services included developing a new cemetery plat, locating the headstones, and recreating the blocks for the plots. raSmith used unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) photogrammetry technology to produce high-resolution orthorectified imagery for the site. The team also performed a boundary survey to collect data. One of the main challenges included capturing images of the headstones to accurately identify the locations as efficiently as possible.

GIS services included recreating historical record information, attributing burial data, and linking scanned burial records to help locate and identify each plot.
