Westside Community Building

Sun Prairie, WI

Project Overview

raSmith provided civil site design services for the Westside Community Building renovation and parking lot reconfiguration. The community center includes the Sun Prairie police and fire departments, as well as many other services for the City of Sun Prairie. raSmith’s work included the complete reconfiguration of the parking lot to provide better flow, while also providing additional parking closer to the community building entrance. The parking lot reconfiguration included the design of sidewalks and crosswalks to provide safer passage from the lots that are further away. A new storm sewer system was designed and tied into the existing conveyance system to provide better site drainage.

The site design involved specific improvements for the fire department, including reinforced concrete to support the weight load from the trucks as well as provide an adequate turning radius for the trucks to enter and leave the department in a safe and quick manner. Since the police and fire departments are essential services to the City of Sun Prairie, the parking lot design involved construction sequences to ensure that each department could continue operations throughout the construction period.
