Project Overview
The New Berlin Community Center at Hickory Grove project involved the transformation of the historic former Hickory Grove School into a modern, multi-use community facility for the City of New Berlin. The renovated building now houses the New Berlin Senior Center, the New Berlin Food Pantry, and a variety of recreation department programs. raSmith partnered with Peter Ogorek of Perspective Design, Inc., who served as the project architect.
The original building had a footprint of 26,200 square feet, and the project included a 1,080-square-foot addition. As part of the redevelopment, roughly half of the original structure, which was no longer usable, was demolished, resulting in a current building footprint of approximately 17,700 square feet. The project also included interior and exterior renovations to address aging infrastructure while preserving the character of the early 20th-century school.
Site improvements included a new parking lot with a drive-through distribution setup for the food pantry, a bioretention basin for stormwater management, and removal of select impervious areas to support future development.
raSmith provided site design, survey, and landscape architecture services for this project.
