Project Overview
Construction is well underway for the $3.6 million expansion of Helen Keller Elementary School in Tinley Park, Illinois. Designed to support the school’s continued growth, this two-phase project includes an eight-classroom addition, new bus drop-off/pick-up area with pedestrian access improvements, and relocation of the existing playground.
raSmith provided comprehensive civil engineering services throughout the project’s development, including the schematic design, preparation of construction documents, regulatory permitting, and coordination with project stakeholders. These services helped streamline approvals and establish a site layout that supports both safety and long-term functionality.
A key project component involved reconfiguring the site to accommodate the relocated playground and a new 16,000-square-foot paved area serving recess activities and student transportation operations. The civil engineering solution balanced the school’s operational needs with site constraints while enhancing circulation and accessibility for students, staff, and visitors.
To address stormwater requirements associated with the site improvements, raSmith designed a new stormwater management system incorporating a StormTrap underground detention facility. The system will help control runoff generated by the expanded impervious surfaces, reducing the risk of erosion and localized flooding while supporting regulatory compliance and protecting surrounding properties.
