The 1122 W. Chicago mixed-use development project (Chicago, Ill.) has received a 2023 Industry Project Award in the mid-rise project category from the Steel Framing Industry Association (SFIA).
1122 W. Chicago, located in Chicago’s River West neighborhood, is an impressive seven-story building spanning 97,000 square feet and comprised of 97 luxury residential units and ground floor retail space. The development boasts exceptional living areas and a stunning rooftop terrace adorned with trees, pergolas, and a dedicated dog park. The exterior facade, featuring a blend of metal panel and glass, adds a touch of sophistication.
The SFIA recognized 1122 W. Chicago for its use of cold-formed steel load-bearing wall, floor, and roof joist systems for the upper six stories of the seven-story structure. Additional elements that contributed to the project’s overall success included the aforementioned rooftop amenities and the staggered arrangement of windows on the south side of the building due to the use of an oversized header.
raSmith provided structural engineering at the podium level for this project. One of the key elements of 1122 W. Chicago was the innovative use of panelized, load-bearing cold-formed steel framing in the construction of the upper six stories. Additionally, a one-story parking garage and structural steel and CMU elements were seamlessly incorporated to enhance the architectural features, including large openings and the distinctive stepped design of the building.
On November 1, 2023, the SFIA announced the winners at a virtual awards ceremony and emphasized the importance of collaboration and innovation in advancing the steel framing industry. “We are honored to have been part of the process that brought 1122 W. Chicago to life. This award is a testament to the hard work and skill of our entire team,” said Jeff Derra, co-director of structural services for raSmith.
