Mark Van Der Wegen, P.E., raSmith project manager, recently attended the APWA Public Works Expo in Chicago through the Wisconsin Chapter Emerging Leaders Program. Below is his personal recap of the experience, highlighting key takeaways, industry insights, and moments of inspiration from PWX 2025.

Attending the 2025 APWA Public Works Expo (PWX) in Chicago, Illinois was a truly memorable journey, made possible by the Wisconsin Chapter Emerging Leaders Program. This event opened the door to a national gathering of public works professionals, where innovation, collaboration, and dedication to our field took center stage. Being surrounded by fellow leaders from across the country not only deepened my connection to the industry but also inspired me to bring fresh ideas home to Wisconsin.

Setting Goals and Expectations
With PWX on the horizon, I anticipated connecting with professionals from around the world, expanding my appreciation for public works, and embracing the vibrant camaraderie of a major expo. My curiosity centered on the evolution of our industry—I was eager to discover innovative solutions and practical insights I could share with my team back home.

Conference Highlights
A standout theme this year was the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in public works. As many sectors face ongoing staffing challenges, it was encouraging to witness AI-driven technologies streamlining daily operations and improving overall efficiency. Conversations with product suppliers and public works experts from various states broadened my understanding of the market’s modern tools and solutions.

Key Takeaways
What set PWX apart was the unwavering commitment and enthusiasm of everyone present. Leadership sessions on communication, delegation, supervision, and work-life balance resonated with me deeply, offering actionable strategies I plan to implement. These takeaways aren’t just theoretical: they’re practical tools for cultivating a stronger, more supportive workplace culture.

Appreciation
I am sincerely grateful to the APWA Wisconsin Chapter for selecting me as an Emerging Leader, to my employer raSmith for making my attendance possible, and to the mentors and sponsors who guided me every step of the way. Their encouragement and support made this transformative experience possible.

Word of Encouragement
For anyone considering PWX or the Emerging Leaders Program—take the leap. The professional enrichment and personal growth gained from this event are unmatched. The relationships, resources, and inspiration you’ll carry forward are invaluable to a career in public works.
