Project Overview
Building upon a previously completed infiltration and inflow investigation, the City of Wauwatosa retained raSmith to conduct follow-up dye water flooding in areas that underwent private property sewer lateral rehabilitation. This effort evaluated the effectiveness of rehabilitation work completed based on findings from the original dye testing program.
The City rehabilitated sewer laterals using open-cut relay (new pipe installation), cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) lining, and grouting techniques extending 5, 10, and 15 feet from the public mainline into private laterals. By returning to previously tested locations and applying the same dye-testing methodology, the project assessed post-rehabilitation conditions and evaluated the effectiveness of each rehabilitation approach.
What makes this project unique is the opportunity to measure the long-term effectiveness of rehabilitation work completed as a result of the original dye testing program. By returning to previously tested locations and applying the same methodology, the City can evaluate which rehabilitation techniques delivered the strongest results and use that information to guide future infrastructure investments. The findings may also provide valuable insight for other communities seeking cost-effective ways to reduce infiltration and inflow and could help inform future rehabilitation, funding, and cost-sharing decisions within the MMSD service area.
