STH 164
Waukesha County, Wisconsin

Awarded "2003 Best Consultant Rural Design," Southeast Region, Wisconsin Dept. of Transportation

STH 164 A hybrid rural/urban typical cross section was designed, featuring an urban median to minimize impacts and shoulders and ditches on the outside. It was the first of its kind to be developed in Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Southeast Region for a high-speed roadway.

Challenges included:

  • A best-fit alignment was developed in an area with rolling terrain and four combined waterway and primary environmental corridor crossings.
  • One high fill area, about 23 feet high, had marsh soils at the toe of the embankment. Special segmented marsh excavation and fill with selected borrow was necessary to stabilize the slopes with live traffic adjacent to the embankment. Construction of the project under traffic required preparation of an extensive construction staging plan.
  • One of the first stormwater quality ponds in WisDOT District 2 was designed adjacent to an area that required outside shoulder curb and storm sewer.
  • Four split block retaining walls varying in height from 6 to 10 feet were designed to minimize impacts to adjacent properties and improve intersection sight distance.
  • Extensive documentation was prepared and secured for two properties eligible to the National Register of Historical Places.
