Landscape Architecture/Irrigation Design

Jones Park, Appleton

Master planning and landscape architectural services were provided for the City of Appleton’s Jones Park, the former water treatment plant property along the Fox River and the WE Energies property to be acquired by the City. The plan examines access, visibility, way finding, aesthetics, safety, adaptive reuse of specific existing structures, redevelopment opportunities, alternative park uses, connectivity of the riverfront to downtown Appleton and other elements.

Preliminary designs were prepared for several key elements.

  • native plantings, meadows and wildflowers for the slopes and wooded hillsides at Jones Park
  • public gardens and additional lighting for a proposed performance stage or bandshell at Jones Park
  • improved parking and traffic flow from the park to the river
  • adaptive reuse of three cylindrical water tanks into raised plazas for seating, historical interpretation, public art and scenic overlooks to the river
  • an interactive water feature/splash pad that reuses pipes, valves and interesting components from the old treatment plant
  • improved riverwalk/trail system along the Fox River including seating, lighting and native shoreline vegetation
