Brad Severson, R.A. Smith National’s Appleton Office, Earns Roundabout Designer Certification and Professional Engineering Registration

BROOKFIELD, WIS.  – Brad Severson, civil engineer in the transportation division of the Appleton office of R.A. Smith National (formerly R.A. Smith & Associates and its National Survey & Engineering Division) – civil engineering, planning, surveying, landscape architecture, GIS and 3D visualization consultants – recently earned his certification as a Level 2 Roundabout Designer (authorized to design single and dual-lane roundabouts) by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), as well as his Wisconsin professional engineering registration.

Severson’s specialty is the design and analysis of modern roundabouts. He is one of only 10 people certified to design two-lane roundabouts in Wisconsin. Severson has completed approximately 60 roundabout designs throughout Wisconsin, a few of which include roundabouts at the State Highway 145 interchanges with U.S.Highways 41 and 45 and the entrance to Cabela’s retail development, Village of Richfield, Washington County, Wisconsin; State Highway 26, City of Watertown, Dodge/Jefferson Counties, Wisconsin (total of 10 roundabouts); and County HighwayP/Pleasant Valley Road, Village of Jackson, Washington County, Wisconsin.

Severson is also responsible for the design and evaluation of urban and rural highway facilities for WisDOT, county highway departments and local units of government. His experience includes hydrologic and drainage design, construction staging and traffic control design and implementation, signing and pavement marking design, preliminary and final roadway design, and quantity calculations and cost estimates.

Severson has a bachelor’s degree in civil and environmental engineering with an emphasis on construction engineering and management from University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Severson lives in the town of Freedom.
