Project Manager, Civil Site Design — Pittsburgh, PA

R.A. Smith National has an opportunity available for a project manager in our land development services division at our Pittsburgh, PA, office. We are seeing candidates who will provide design and consulting services associated with our fast-paced land development practice. The qualified candidate will serve as a primary contact for our clients and will be responsible for ensuring that contracted services are provided in a timely and professional manner, and will have overall responsibility for the success of all aspects of assigned projects.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Zoning review of municipal land development ordinances and applicable outside agency regulations and permitting to determine land development limitations for the property
  • Site investigation and due diligence research
  • Organizing and leading project-related meetings and presentations
  • Coordinating with clients, team members, sub-consultants and preparing proposals
  • Assessing fiscal aspects of project work, informing client of expenses and work progress
  • Evaluating project progress, staffing, budgets, and methods of analysis and objectives
  • Keeping clients fully advised on a regular basis regarding progress, budget and challenges
  • Planning and executing QA/QC plan for individual projects
  • Supervising and training project staff members

The candidate selected for this position will have:

  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Civil Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) in PA
  • Minimum of 5 years’ progressive experience in all aspects of civil engineering
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D
  • Experience, from initial project planning through construction phase, in all aspects of: site development; water distribution and sewer collection systems design; parking lots and roads; storm water management; grading, erosion and sediment control
  • Experience managing multiple projects and/or task orders simultaneously
  • Experience directing staff to carry out the project
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Self-starter who can work independently and with a team

Accounting Specialist — Brookfield, WI

R.A. Smith National is searching for a motivated, organized and detail-oriented person with strong interpersonal skills to join the accounting department of our corporate headquarters in Brookfield, WI. The accounting specialist will focus on project processes and financial-related project activities centering on contracts, billing and collections. This person will report directly to the corporate controller as a member of the accounting team, and will interface with division directors and project managers on a firm-wide basis.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Preparing monthly billing of client invoices
  • Preparing various accounting entries to general ledger
  • Preparing various account reconciliations
  • Maintaining accurate and reliable financial information on projects
  • Maintain excellent communication with Project Managers
  • Conducting monthly billing review meetings with project managers
  • Preparing and assisting project managers with Deltek Vision and Vision Reports
  • Reviewing consultant agreements/invoices for payment processing
  • Assisting in collection of accounts receivable
  • Reviewing timesheets on a weekly basis

  • Associates degree in Accounting or higher preferred.

Construction Field Services Representatives – Brookfield, WI

R.A. Smith National has a number of openings available for both full-time seasonal and on-call construction field services representatives in our Construction Services Division. Employee benefits are provided for full-time seasonal positions. We are looking for civil engineers or individuals who have previous inspection experience doing either roadway/DOT or municipal projects.

Candidates selected for these positions will monitor the activities of contractors on construction sites and the construction process to verify that work completed is in accordance with contract documents; assist the Construction Manager with the coordination of all construction activities; provide daily inspection of construction activities; and assist in scheduling of equipment and/or material delivery to meet project schedules.

Candidates must have at least five years of experience and possess a working knowledge of basic surveying in addition to the ability to work efficiently in Excel.

Ecologist/Project Manager – Pittsburgh, PA

Our firm is currently seeking a full-time ecologist/project manager at our Pittsburgh location. This is an exciting opportunity as the successful candidate will be assisting us to build our ecological services group in the Pittsburgh marketplace.

Candidates should have 5 to 10 years of professional experience, in addition to the following qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Pennsylvania regulatory programs and guidance (working relationships with agency staff is a plus).
  • Knowledge of the flora and fauna in Pennsylvania and surrounding ecoregion.
  • Field experience in wetland and waterway delineation, as well as reporting and permitting.
  • Wetland mitigation design experience is a plus.
  • Natural resource inventory, assessment and mapping.
  • Experience using Trimble GEO XH GPS units to collect field data.
  • General understanding of computer-aided mapping software (e.g., ArcMap).
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel).
  • Project management experience (proposal writing, client coordination, invoicing, etc.).

The successful candidate must also satisfy the following requirements:

  • B.S. in Environmental Science or related degree (MS or PhD a plus).
  • 5 to 10 years of related work experience.
  • Excellent oral, written and analytical skills.
  • Self-motivated, positive, organized and ability to work independently.
  • Be able to travel, as projects require, and be willing to work in sometimes difficult field situations.

CADD Technician - Brookfield/Appleton, WI

The position of Cadd Technician is currently available for a qualified candidate with 0 to 5 years of experience. The candidate selected for this position could work out of either the Brookfield or Appleton, WI offices. Job responsibilities include the preparation of simple plan drawings, using computer aided drafting techniques to perform applicable detailing, and alteration of drawings to conform with engineering changes, in addition to the preparation of plan sets for submittals and or meetings. Candidates for this position must have a good understanding of AutoCAD, and an understanding of Microstation for use in the Transportation Division is preferred. An Associates Degree in Civil Engineering or completion of a technical school’s technician program is also required.

Survey Party Chief

The Pittsburgh office has an opening for a Survey Party Chief who will be responsible for planning, organizing, and surveying land surfaces to determine precise location and measurements of points, elevations, lines, areas, and contours for construction projects, mapmaking, land division, titles or other purposes. Additional responsibilities include performing calculations and preparing reports in support of all survey activities. Individuals selected for this position will be highly motivated and self-starters with 3 to 5 years of experience as a Party Chief. They will also be proficient operating Trimble software and GPS equipment. A working knowledge of Civil3D is a plus, along with the ability to use other survey software.
